Artificial reality is the ability through technology or other means to create an alternate form of reality that people can immerse themselves in as a form of recreation, where the simulated form of reality is indistinguishable from actual reality. So far the only popularly known form of artificial reality exists in the Star Trek franchise in the form of the holodeck, creating artificial realities through the use of holograms. This is not to be confused with virtual reality, in which devices are attached to a person's body in order to experience through the senses an alternate simulated reality.
Empath: The Luckiest Smurf stories
In the EMPATH: The Luckiest Smurf story series, the Smurf Village Imaginarium is capable of creating artificial realities for the Smurfs to entertain themselves with. Prior to this, Papa Smurf created an artificial reality through the use of the "reality bubble" spell that he cast over the entire Smurf Village to make Dreamy believe that he has again traveled to the planet of the Swoofs, though this only lasted for a short time and ended prematurely because Brainy did not complete the entire formula as written in Papa Smurf's spellbook. Later on in life, after the Smurf Village was destroyed, a very old Empath Smurf was able to create an artificial reality through the use of his mental abilities.
