"Are you dead?"

- A snarky quote from the 2011 Smurfs movie

Azrael is a character who is part of the EMPATH: The Luckiest Smurf story series, appearing mostly in the novel.

History

He is Gargamel's cat who hunts after Smurfs at every opportunity he gets when encountering them. Of all the Smurfs who have had the misfortune of dealing directly with Azrael, Empath is the only one who can directly stand up against him since neither he nor any cat are able to protect themselves from Empath's mental and physical abilities. Eventually during the events of the EMPATH novel, Azrael was forced out of the Smurf forest along with Gargamel and Scruple.

Ironically, Azrael has been the inspiration for both the caterwauling guitar and for the name of Sloppy's musical band, Azrael Rocks.

Personality

Azrael tends to be very snarky and disdainful of his master's varied attempts to capture the Smurfs, not to mention his claims of being a great and powerful sorcerer, but is nonetheless faithful and vicious enough to hunt after Smurfs and catch them, since like any cat he sees Smurfs as little blue mice. Also like regular cats, Azrael is affected by and attracted to catnip.

Appearance

Azrael is a brown-white house cat with a notch in his right ear.

Notes

  • Azrael is notably a brown cat in the cartoon show, whereas in his comic book appearances and in the 2011 Smurfs movie, he is an orange cat. Also, Azrael was originally female in the comic books and became male in the cartoon show, which would eventually become the character's gender for all subsequent interpretations. Gargamel lampshades the whole gender issue of Azrael in the 2011 Smurfs movie.
  • The rip in Azrael's right ear is never explained except in the 2011 Smurfs movie, when his ear is pinned by a metal crate that falls on him when he is chasing Smurfette around inside Belvedere Castle in Central Park.
  • Azrael's eyes are white with black pupils in the comic books and in The Smurfs: A Christmas Carol, while they are gold with black pupils in the cartoon show. The EMPATH: The Luckiest Smurf interpretation of the character has Azrael's eyes be white with black pupils.
  • The illustration used for the infobox is Azrael's appearance from The Smurfs: A Christmas Carol, using the cartoon show version's coloring.
  • As with the cartoon show version, Azrael is a descendant of a cat with royal blood in his veins -- the cat pharaoh Azra whom the Smurfs meet during their time-travel adventures in The Lost Year.
