The crystal disk is an invention of Handy Smurf that appears in the EMPATH: The Luckiest Smurf story series. It is a small disk made of crystals processed through Handy's recycling machine on which music can be recorded and played back from, similar to the modern-day invention of the compact disc. Also like the compact disc, it has a sound quality that is much cleaner than that of phonograph records made from wax. Crystal disks require a special player that Handy has developed a few years after Empath's final return from Psychelia, which he showed to his fellow Smurfs at a demonstration.
Within a month of the invention's debut, Smurfette with the help of Empath recorded the first album to appear in the crystal disk format, Ray Of Sunshine, which became the most popular album in the Smurf Village since the Smurflings' "Smurfbop" single.
- This is unrelated to the recent creation of a glass storage disc which is capable of holding 360 terabytes of computer data.
