Elysium (also referred to as the Elysian Fields) is one of the afterlife locations of Greek mythology that is considered the counterpart of heaven.

Smurfing In Heaven

Elysium is considered the heavenly afterlife for the Smurfs, who generally refer to it as "the smurfy hereafter" and "the here beyond" in the EMPATH: The Luckiest Smurf story series. It is considered the reward of a faithful and righteous Smurf in their particular belief system. The opposite afterlife destination would be Tartarus, which is where all unfaithful and condemned souls go when they die. According to Papa Smurf, Elysium resembles a version of the Smurf Village made entirely of gold. It is a state of such eternal bliss that even sex pales in comparison to those who have experienced it in brief out-of-body visitations.

In the story "Smurfing In Heaven", Empath believed that he had died and was taken by his fellow Smurfs to Elysium to join them in the happy afterlife that they were given. However, it is revealed that this Elysium, along with all of Empath's fellow Smurfs who claimed to be its residents, were nothing more than supernatural illusions created by Ares the god of war in order to bring Empath to him and offer the gift of godhood to his admired and intended recipient.
