"Everything that I am as a king, I owe a debt of gratitude to my friends."
King Gerard is a character who is part of the EMPATH: The Luckiest Smurf story series.
He was originally Prince Gerard, a human prince and the son of King Garrett, who was held hostage in his own kingdom by his aunt Imperia, who intended to take her nephew's rightful place on the throne on what would be his twelfth birthday. However, with the help of Clockwork Smurf, King Gerard exposed and foiled Imperia's plans, and thus was made king. From then on, he made Clockwork Smurf his trusted royal advisor.
King Gerard has had contact with the Smurfs since that time, up until his royal wedding with Princess Guinevere, when he met Empath for the first time. At the time of Empath and Smurfette's wedding, he had a son named Jared. In the 21st Century, he would have a descendant by the name of Gerry Royeaux.
He is a kind and benevolent king who was initially inexperienced with the role placed before him when he was crowned king, often relying on Clockwork Smurf for advice. His friends from King Audric's castle, Johan and Peewit, had to bail him out of a situation that involved his uncle Leopold taking over the kingdom, requiring him to think for himself instead of always having to rely on Clockwork. He is very grateful for both his human friends and for the Smurfs, who came to his rescue again when he was changed into a stag by his cousin Malcolm the Mean, and considers Mrs. Sourberry the closest thing he had to a mother since his own mother passed away at childbirth.
His desired voice actor would be Freddie Highmore, who voiced the lead character of Justin from the animated movie Justin And The Knights Of Valor. His alternate desired voice actor would be Daniel Radcliffe, who played the title character of the Harry Potter film series.
