"You say it best when you say nothing at all."
- - Woody
Laconia is a character who is part of the EMPATH: The Luckiest Smurf story series. She is a woodelf who is born mute and thus has learned to speak in sign language. Her first contact with the Smurfs was when Poet magically lost his voice about a few years before Empath's final return from Psychelia, and thus Papa Smurf brought her to the village in order to teach Poet how to speak in sign language. She became friends with the Smurfs over the years, and was married to her husband Woody the woodelf through a wedding ceremony hosted by them.
Empath has met Laconia a few times since his final return from Psychelia and is able to read her thoughts, which surprisingly he hears in a voice similar to that of Smurfette's. However, like his fellow Smurfs, Empath prefers to communicate with Laconia through sign language. Her latest known appearance was at Empath and Smurfette's wedding, where it was revealed that she and Woody had a daughter together.
Besides Woody, Singer Smurf was in love with Laconia, but had never admitted his true feelings towards her.
Laconia has a great-grandmother named Blossom, who is able to speak and has the power to make things blossom and mature. It is believed that she was responsible for teaching the young girl how to speak in sign language.
- Her name is derived from one of the regional units of Greece, also known as Lacedaemonia, from which we get the term laconic, meaning "using few words; expressing much in few words; concise".
- In the cartoon show, Laconia was originally portrayed as a regular mute, but from "Smurfily Ever After" on she would be a deaf-mute. The EMPATH: The Luckiest Smurf story series version of Laconia is a regular mute, as she is able to hear other people perfectly, but is unable to hear music unless it's generated internally.
Though normally Laconia wouldn't have a voice actor because the character is mute, her thoughts as heard by Empath would be voiced by Hynden Walch, who is the voice of Starfire from the Teen Titans cartoon show.
