Merpeople (also referred to as mermen, merfolk, and mermaids) are underwater people with the lower half of their bodies resembling a fish. They mostly live in the sea in a region called Atlantica. As with fish, merpeople must live in the sea or at least in water constantly supplied with oxygen, or else they will die.

The Smurfs first encountered a mermaid named Marina in "Handy's Sweetheart" when she was trying to swim upstream to reach the pools of Avalon to find the cure for her ailing father King Aquarius. Though Handy fell in love with Marina, the two of them realized that neither can live long together in each other's world. Marina appeared in at least a few more episodes after that point.
In the episode "Sassette's Bewitching Friendship", Sassette's friend Melina accidentally turned Smurfette into a mermaid. However, unlike most other mermaids, Smurfette was given a clamshell bra during her transformation.
Two merchildren also showed up in the episode "Smurf A Mile In My Shoes" to play a prank on Jokey Smurf when he was stranded on a deserted island.

Although Marina and King Aquarius are the only known characters likely to appear in the EMPATH: The Luckiest Smurf story series, they may not be the only merpeople (the Smurfs in this universe generally refer to them as merfolk) to exist. Marina over the course of her history fell in love with Dylan the Snorkelian, and thus her relationship with Handy was broken off, though they still remained as friends.

Within The Light and Dark Series, there are only a few mermaid characters introduced with two of them being imported from mainstream media and one original character.
In the Season 2 episode, "Skipping Stones," Marina sends a letter to Handy Smurf alerting him that her father, King Aquarius has approved of her becoming betrothed to a merman named Drake.

Oceana, Wave, and Aqua are mermaids that appear in the Season 10 episode "Visiting Atlantica." The cartoon-imported character, Marina, is mentioned in this season.
Hero: The Guardian Smurf stories[]
At some point in the series, Handy meets Marina the mermaid when she tries to gather lilyroot from the Pool of Avalon for her father King Aquarius; who is cared for by his wife and Marina's mother, Queen Primarina, for the time being, with the pool located up the River Smurf. Handy and Marina soon fall in love with each other and try many ways to be together, but each attempt ends up failing, but this doesn't stop from seeing each other on regular occasions.
