Petros Churchill Smurf (also known as Pontifex Maximus or High Reverend Father) is a fictional character that appears in an Imaginarium fantasy setting called Tribulation in the EMPATH: The Luckiest Smurf story series.
He is the leader of a one-world religion who in that scenario is supposed to be the prophesied False Prophet that would emerge before Jesus' Second Coming. He halfway through the Tribulation promotes worship of Declan Xavier Smurf as God incarnate upon the earth, forcing the people to take the infamous "mark of the beast" or perish.
In his role as the one-world church leader, Petros wears a long robe and a shawl with festive religious symbols of all sorts decorated on it, plus a miter similar to what the Catholic pope wears.
- His name is based on the Roman Catholic belief that Jesus Christ has founded the church upon his apostle Peter and that he is given "the keys to the kingdom of heaven", granting him the authority to "bind and loose" things on earth. However, the naming is more a parody of the Catholic belief than a tribute to it.
- His titles Pontifex Maximus and High Reverend Father both come from characters in the LEFT BEHIND book series, with Pontifex Maximus being the title used by Peter Mathews, the leader of the one-world church known as Enigma Babylon One World Faith, and High Reverend Father being the later title of Leonardo Fortunato, who became the spiritual leader of Carpathianism.
